September 1 in Ukraine traditionally celebrates the Day of Knowledge. This feast was celebrated as a state in the USSR from 1984

The first autumn day across the country in schools distributed the first calls, announcing the beginning of the new academic year. The Law on General Secondary Education, adopted in May 1999, the Day of Knowledge - September 1, the school year begins in secondary schools regardless of their subordination, types and forms of ownership.

Under the legislation, in Ukraine there are 11-year-old system of education and compulsory pre-school education from five years.

In 2010, 20,600 schools have more than 4 million 300 thousand students, including 405,500 first-graders (against 393 million last year) and 370,000 eleventh. Holiday in school begins with a solemn line, after which usually begin lessons.
